Community OUTREACH About Us

Helping Hand Meal Deliveries for Moms
GGMG volunteers traditionally have cooked and delivered meals for brand new moms. We're extending that to any member who needs a helping hand. So whether your baby is now three months old and the out-of-town "help" has finally left, you're expecting you second and can't face the kitchen, or you just need a little support, let us know by emailing a request for a meal to: communitysupport@ggmg.org.

New Baby Announcements
Announce your new baby in the next newsletter by sending your name and baby's name to newbaby@ggmg.org.

Grants
We provide grant monies to selected non-profits that have been nominated by the membership every spring in addition to a founder's award whose money goes to a non-profit founded by a fellow mother. Finally, we publish new baby announcements in the newsletter and administer the Helping Hand meal delivery service whereby any member with a need can request a delivered meal, provided by another volunteer member.

We are pleased to announce the following recipients of the 2007 Golden Gate Mothers Group annual charity grants.

Rebuilding Together San Francisco (formerly Christmas in April) revitalizes communities with the help of thousands of volunteers. Since 1989, Rebuilding Together San Francisco (RTSF) has provided home repairs for low-income families and renovations for community facilities like, playgrounds, childcare centers, and public schools.

RTSF's most established program, Rebuilding Weekend is a two-day citywide renovation effort that is the culmination of a year's worth of planning and coordination. Rebuilding Weekend—the last weekend in April each year—benefits nonprofit agencies and public schools that serve a diverse community of San Franciscans. On Rebuilding Weekend, teams of volunteers work under the direction of architects, designers and space planners to create efficient, stimulating work environments that improve nonprofit agencies' productivity and ability to fulfill their mission.

Holy Family Day Home (HFDH) is an early childhood education program that serves largely low-income and homeless families with children from infants to kindergarteners. Many of the children live in shelters, cars or on the street - HFDH is the only stable aspect of their lives, nurturing self-esteem while ensuring that these children gain the educational, nutritional, and other tools needed so that they do not start Kindergarten so far behind that they never catch up.

HFDH not only provides education, and creative stimulation, it also provides 2 hot meals and a healthy snack each day; it provides a "grandparent" from the community in each classroom; it provides medical care and psychological counseling; there are also social workers on-site to deal with myriad needs. HFDH provides health and counseling services for the children as well as programs for parents such as parenting skills, computer skills and resume writing.

In its 106 years, HFDH has altered the life course of over 15,000 San Francisco families. HFDH strives to give each child the precious gift of a future filled with possibilities, and the understanding that they are worthy of those possibilities.

Access Institute is committed to making quality mental health care affordable to San Franciscans, particularly to those individuals and families who fall within the broad gap between those eligible for publicly-funded mental health programs and the more affluent who have adequate insurance or the financial means to afford treatment.

They offer low-fee individual psychotherapy, family and group treatment, medication consultation, and psychological testing to adults, children, adolescents, and seniors. Services are offered on a sliding scale. In August of 2006, Access Institute began a collaboration with Grattan Elementary School, to provide on-site therapy for the students there who need additional support. Access Institute interns also provide consultation support for the parents and teachers of the children in need. What is unique about this school-based program is that it will not have to end with the school year. Pro-bono therapy services for the students will continue to be offered over the summer. The children and their families will have the opportunity to work with the same therapist for up to 2 years, providing deeper work and a stronger possibility for personal growth and academic improvement.

The Founders Award
The Founders Award honors our founder, Wynn Burkett, her co-director, Faith Anaya, and the original Steering Committee. This award is specifically given to recognize a GGMG member making a difference for women and children in San Francisco.

Leah's Pantry was founded by Adrienne Markworth in September 2006 as a social justice organization empowering marginalized families to feel confident in their ability to feed themselves. They believe that nutrition is intimately linked with health and wellness, and that a well-fed family will be more stable and more successful than a family that fails to meet nutritional requirements. Their approach is to conduct innovative, on-site nutrition workshops at transitional homeless shelters and affordable housing communities. To date, almost all of their clients have been mothers of young children in San Francisco. They are currently the only organization in the San Francisco Bay Area providing this service to these specific populations. Through workshops, participants are empowered to make healthy changes in their diet through targeted goal setting, education, and hands on activities. The workshops are fun, interactive, and always end with the preparation of an easy, healthy recipe!
